Semiotics and its meanings in our lives

Semiotics serves as a very useful set of tools for identifying many of the formal patterns that work to make meaning in many aspects of our culture, particularly the media.

1)Do semiotic systems have any effect on human behavior?

2)If we were exposed to different signs, would our lives be different?

  1. 1)Yes, semiotic systems affects human behaviour. For example, indexs, icons and symbols brings out its specific meanings as different messages to the human brain. And so, human will react differently towards any signs that distributes to them, either physically or mentally.

2)Yes, our lives will be totally different, especially when we exposed ourselves to different culture and lifestyles, we will certainly have different mind/ concept of specific signs in our lives. For example, in Chinese culture, Chinese believes that dragon brings happiness, luck and prosperity to their families, academics and most importantly in business while in Western countries, they believed dragons are dark and evil, and also brings bad luck to the family and all. So, in my opinion, if we lived in certain places and influenced ourselves with the concepts of signs in that area, we will have different mind-sets on certain things.

  2. 1)Semiotic exist in human life every day. every symbol icon created is help human understand attract human for certain information. Human will attract by certain color, icon or shape, understand the rule of semiotic able to deliver the message to human in daily life.
2)Out life is exposed to signs, everyday product we used today have his own brand, every branded product is identified by its logo. Every single icon we saw on street for us to aware the road. sometime a message behind a small icon is more than thousand words. Semiotic is an international language.

  3. 1. semiotic systems affects human behaviour, Actually, in our life every symbol will show the information to human. when we see that information, we can understant what is that then we will have different behaviour.

2.Symbols, including language, words, signs, and even the individual's movements and posture is also a symbol. Through symbolic interaction, formation and change people's self-concept, process and respond to external changes. For example: Red means good fortune in China, so when we see the red colour people will feel happy. but for another country maybe it mean blood, people will feel scared or angry.

  4. 1) Yes. It is because we are used to expose to lots of sign, symbol and index since we were born. Therefore, semiotic system do effect on human behaviour. One of the examples is traffic light. When we see traffic light turn to red, we will stop and when it turns green, we will go. It is because we understand the sign that the red is mean stop and green is mean go.

    2) Yes. If we were exposed to different signs, our lives will be different. I agree with what Shen Bao said in her comment that when we exposed ourselves to different culture and lifestyle, we will certainly have different concept of specific signs in our lives. For example, on Deepavali festival, Indian people will put on oil lamp because they believe the light is to signify the triumph of good over evil. While, on Chinese New Year, Chinese people like to decorate all item in red, because they believe red is brings good. In conclusion, people will act differently on their understanding of the signs.

  5. 1. Yes, around us mostly we can see is SEMIOTIC and it's affect our behavior even we won't notice it. Like Bing ling said, people get attract with color. In shopping complex, we can see many advertisement or print ads, people usually get attract with fancy pictures, the advertisers know how to attract buyers to buy a things.

    2. Since Malaysia have many race, all race have their own culture, we encourage to respect other culture. I'm agree with yen and shen bao. Perhaps, our life's maybe not be so much different, if we follow others culture, just for Muslim can't follow certain issues.

  6. 1)Semiotic systems affect human behavior. A single image can bring human specific meaning and different messages. Semiotics is important because it can help us not take 'reality' for granted as something having a purely objective existence which is independent of human interpretation. It teaches us that reality is actually a system of signs.

2)Yes, our lives will be different, every day we see the single icon on street, different icon gives us different meaning! For example U-turn, or attention icon! A photograph or a proper sign!

  7. 1) Yes, semiotic systems have some effect on human behavior. We can see signs, indexs, and symbols everytime and everywhere so our life is effected by semiotic systems in our daily life. But we may ignore them because we think it's too common in our lives. When we see a sign, a index or a symbol, we will get a specifie meaning in our mind. That's come from our common sence, our experience, our background and etc. When different people see a specific symbol, the meaning comes to their mind sometimes be same but sometimes different. For example, when we see a red traffic light, we will stop, when we see an advertisement of sale, we may go to have a look if we have something to buy. So semiotic systems affect our behavior.

    2) Yes. our lives will be different if we were exposed to different signs. That's come from our common sence, our experience, our background and etc. For example, white color means elegant and pure in some western countries, so they like white and wear white in wedding. But in traditional Chinese culture, white means bad luck, silly and failure. So Chinese won't wear white for happy things. That's a kind of difference because of different culture.
